Today was a momentous day for the Church of England. After centuries in existence, and of male domination, women will finally be allowed to be bishops. The church sees women and men as equal in the eyes of God, and now they will have the right to equal representation. The church and its' leadership have evolved. Life changes. Expectations, values and interpretations of the scriptures have changed, and will continue to do so.
Should those religions that demand non-stun slaughter not also evolve? What was a necessity in the past, because alternatives did not exist, should now be seen for what it is, both cruel and inhumane. People should be able to believe what they wish, but not where it causes harm and suffering to others. All others, animals included.
I read an article by a Rabbi which stated that in this day and age most Jews do not keep kosher. I have no statistics for other religions, but my guess is that they, too, do not have total observance of the rules. For how many people are animals suffering because of rules they do not truly follow or care about any more?
Denmark has banned non-stun slaughter, and other countries could follow, but it would be better to see the influential leaders of these religions decide it is time to make changes themselves, just as the church has with accepting female bishops.
Another alternative would be for the EU to show some leadership and end non-stun slaughter within its borders - but this would require a change in Article 13 TFEU.
Victoria (a petition champion) reflects on changes in society and the need for further change for animals.
